As I’ve recently decided to write about certain personal development tactics I employ, I figured I’d continue with another important facet of that arena. (If you haven’t read the others, you can catch up here and here.)

I’m sure you’ve heard it many times, but it bears repeating that unless you’re taking care of yourself first, it’s extremely difficult to help others.

Personal development is one of the areas in life that is necessary for everyone. It’s not a luxury for the super successful, wealthy, highly intelligent, or physically attractive.

What contributes mostly to these things? Being intentional about your personal development.

If you are or desiring to be a leader in some capacity, this is non-negotiable.

If you are unable to build yourself by giving the proper time to growing your understanding, then you’ll find that your influence quickly fading.

That’s what leadership boils down to according to John Maxwell – influence.

Leadership is not about position, title, degrees on the wall, etc. If you are influencing people, you are a leader.

Today, I’d like to discuss an area where it’s easy to slack off in – physical exercise.

I’ve always believed that the longer we’re alive, the more chances we have to make a difference, and one of the most important ways to help ensure that is taking care of our physical bodies.

We prioritize the items that are important and give attention to those things that we place the highest value on.

One of the staples that we need to include in our personal development is exercise.

If you are unable to take care of yourself, then it’s impossible to help others. This is true for learning and increasing your knowledge and it also applies to our physical health.

The first place you need to start when thinking about exercise is what your goals are.

This is not a call to give yourself to exercise so much that it becomes your profession. If that’s you, then okay, but very few of us view this as a reality or lifetime goal.

What I’m referring to is building a plan and structure in your life that promotes health, energy, and focus.

That’s what physical exercise does for the body.

So write down your goals and commit to it, which is often easier with an accountability partner. If you’re married, perhaps get your spouse involved. If not, find someone with similar goals and be accountable to them.

After you set your goals, it’s best to get educated about what you plan to do.

Are you needing to lose weight? Do you need more stamina? Are you trying to maybe build a little muscle?

Everyone is unique and our body responds to different methods of exercise, so figure out how yours does. All of us need to avoid being sedentary though.

Me personally, I would love to run a marathon and maybe one day I’ll train for and accomplish that feat, but my body just will not hold up to long distance running.

1-3 miles using intervals of running and walking works great to increase my stamina.

This is an area that doesn’t require endless amounts of time invested either. That’s what’s so appealing to me about this part of development.

I realize that depending on our schedules and work conditions, it’s easy to get conditioned into putting this on the backburner. However, you can be on your way to getting healthier with 30 minutes of exercise 3-4 times a week.

Make a conscious effort though to not only incorporate this into your development but also to couple it with making good choices about what you eat and in no time you’ll see a difference.

I’m sure there are many people with much more experience who can coach you, train you, and lead you through this. If you need that, find a trainer or use an app to help you stay detailed and organized.

I know other areas may be easier to undertake, but can you leave the “what if” behind and start a plan in this area of your life?

If you have some helpful tips or resources, leave that in the comments and share!
